What Is Nakshatra

Indian history states that the process of choosing baby name by Hindu Nakshatra has been followed since centuries. It is followed even today.

In Hinduism, generally parents choose baby names by Hindu Nakshatra. According to the Hindu mythology, it is considered to be one of the most auspicious ways. The term “Nakshatra” means “skymap” due to “naks” meaning “sky” and “shetra” meaning “region”. Another translation is done by using a different analysis. It says “Naksha” is a “map” and “tara” is a “star” and so “Nakshatra” means “Start Map”. Both these meanings clearly bring out the significance of the 27 Nakshatras and constellations. Since ancient times the Moon was looked for calculating time and connected to stars. It is a very complex method. So often, parents seek for the Hindu astrologers who have deep knowledge about these methods.

Hindu astrologers have suggested that the birth of every child is governed by a particular Nakshartra, which should be used in deciding the first letter of the name of the child. The Nakshatra present in the moon at the time of child’s birth offers four possible sounds. It is advised to choose one sound out of the given four that correspond to the division or pada of the Nakshatra. So every parent then uses the selected sound to look for various names available.

Following is a list of all Nakshatras and their pada.
